According to FoodForward.org, Americans are throwing away 6 billion (yes, Billion with a B) pounds of food EVERY month. Three of the biggest reasons for food waste are 1. for cosmetic standards and blemishes in fruits and vegetables, 2. consumers overstocking and over purchasing food when they grocery shop, and 3. not understanding the meaning behind sell-by and expiration dates.

In 2013, the government even launched a National Food Waste Challenge and announced a goal to eliminate 50% of the current food waste by 2030.
