Freezer to Table: Frozen Kale Smoothie that is Healthy and Tastes Delicious!
Jan 17th 2017
We are in the midst of winter, it's the New Year, and we are all finding ways to make resolutions to change our eating habits to be more healthy, cut costs, and save money. We thought, what a better way than to use some of the ingredients we froze months ago, when fruits and vegetables were in their prime, to make a fresh smoothie that is healthy and tastes amazing!
It's been nearly 7 months since we wrote the blog about freezing your garden fresh kale to make it readily available any time of year. We also used the blueberries that we vacuum sealed and froze over the summer. And lastly, the bananas that were about to go bad, we saved them by vacuum sealing them and tossed them in the freezer. We pulled all 3 of these ingredients out of the freezer and made the best Kale smoothie!
Ingredients:
1 cup-ish Frozen Kale
1 cup-ish Frozen Blueberries
2 Frozen Bananas
1 cup Original Almond Milk
3/4 cup of Plain Greek Yogurt
1 Tbsp Raw Honey (optional to add sweetness)
*This recipe is very forgiving, so amounts don't have to be exact and you can substitute other fruits to make your favorite flavors.
A benefit of using frozen kale and frozen fruit is that you don't need to add ice to get the frozen smoothie consistency.
Directions:
- Gather and measure ingredients.
- Open your vacuum sealed bags.
- Add ingredients to your blender.
- Almond milk
- Frozen Blueberries
- Frozen Kale - If your kale is frozen in a solid chunk, you can break it up into smaller pieces to make the blending process easier.
- Frozen Bananas
- Plain Greek Yogurt
- Topped with a drizzle of honey!
- Next step, blend until smooth!
Once blended, pour and serve.
This recipe makes 2 large smoothies.
TIP: Pre-measure / portion out your ingredients in the vacuum seal bags prior to freezing. This makes it easy to just open bag and add ingredients straight to the blender without measuring. Also makes for a quick and easy clean up!
